BROILER CHICKEN |
Products |
Kevin Doll and his son Nick prepare to move the Portable Pasture Poultry Pens |
We raise Cornish x Rocks and White Mountain for our broiler chickens. They have a broad breast and large thighs. This bird is the backbone of the modern broiler industry. But we don't raise our broiler chickens as they do in large CAFOs ("concentrated animal feeding operations)! No, no, no! We purchase chicks from a reputable breeder. They arrive at our doorstep at one day old. After a time in the brooder, they are moved outside to our Portable Pasture Poultry Pens. These pens are moved across our fields. Each day the chickens enjoy a new fresh patch of grass, alfalfa, oats, etc with its compliment of insects. We supplement their diet with our all natural grain feed. Being outside offers a healthy environment of fresh air and sunshine and the pens offer security against predators. I can't tell you how popular these birds are! People are always telling us, they won't eat store-bought chicken any more! |
Our 2010 price for a Broiler Chicken is $3.40/lb. They come dressed and packaged whole by a licensed processor, wrapped in a strong plastic bag, suitable for freezing. Giblets are not included. They can be separately purchased at a price of $5.50/lb. Our broilers generally range 3.5 lbs to 5.5 lbs. If you have a preference on size, we’ll do our best to accommodate.

Thank you all for being such good Back Forty Acres chicken customers! It's because of you that we have decided to increase production in 2010 from 1,650 birds in 2009 to over 2,100! We're planning on 9 batches, June through early October. That's fresh chicken about every two weeks! Wow! Remember that after October, we're done for the year. Because we raise them outside, the weather becomes iffy and the pastures are either dormant or covered with snow. So stock up your freezers! That’s what we do.
